Scenarios

Keep every what-if for a model in one place: pick one to read, filter and rename them, and search, sort and bulk-act across all of them.

Needs a model open

Where: Scenarios

Scenarios is the model's what-if workbench. The list of scenarios is on the left, the selected scenario's results in the middle, and the editor on the right. Browse all swaps the three columns for a searchable index of every scenario.

  1. 1Pick a what-if
  2. 2Describe the change in plain English
  3. 3Run scenario
  4. 4Read RIA's answer
  5. 5Compare each KPI with Base
  6. 6Verify the number before you act

Open Scenarios

  • With a model open, click Scenarios in the rail.
  • Press Ctrl/⌘+K and pick Go to Scenarios. With no model open it reads Open a model first.
  • On the model home, click Open scenarios or Run a what-if in Step 4.

If the model was deleted, the screen reads That model is no longer available; click Browse models.

Find your way around

The middle column follows whichever scenario you select:

A model built from a workbook also gets a button to refresh it from an updated workbook; see Start from a workbook.

Make room for the middle column:

  • Collapse scenarios list and Collapse scenario editor fold each side to a narrow rail. Click the rail (Scenarios or Editor) to open it again.
  • Drag the edge between columns to resize. The list runs 200 to 480 pixels wide, the editor 300 to 560.
  • On a narrow window, eode folds side panes for you.

With a scenario selected, the header reads Scenarios › scenario. Click Scenarios there to open the index.

Filter the list

The chips above the list are All, Solved and Failed, each with a count. A chip with nothing in it is turned off.

Each row shows a mark for its state (a spinner while it runs, a check when solved, a warning triangle when it failed, a hollow circle before it has run), its name, and its what-if in two lines. Click a row to select it.

  • Rows don't show your goal's value by default. Turn on Show objective function in Page settings to show it.
  • stale · solved rev n and an amber edge mean the model changed since the scenario solved; see Keep results current.
  • While a scenario runs, a log of its progress opens under its row. It holds only what this browser saw.

Add, rename and delete scenarios

Owner or contributor

Row actions are faint until you hover or tab to the row.

ActionWhat it does
+ NewName this scenario (default What-if), then Create. Adds an empty scenario and selects it. Nothing is solved.
Rename scenario (pencil)Edit in place. Enter or Save keeps it; Esc or Cancel backs out.
Delete scenario (bin)Asks Delete scenario "name"?, "This cannot be undone." Base has no delete.
Collect this scenario's inputs (captures what it assumed — no re-solve) (clipboard)Records the values the scenario assumed, without solving again. Shows only on a scenario that hasn't recorded them yet.
Regenerate against the updated modelOn stale rows; see Keep results current.

A scenario can't be named Base or BASE DATA. eode quietly keeps the old name (or creates nothing).

Know Base from BASE DATA

Base is the model's own solve, with no changes; its row reads As built — no overrides. It can't be deleted, and once solved it is read-only; you can only re-solve it (Run a what-if).

A model imported from a workbook may also have BASE DATA: the values read straight from your workbook before any solve. "No solve has run yet on this scenario; the BASE scenario carries the solved numbers." It shows the workbook's own KPIs instead of KPI tiles (see Read results), and has no Verify, Open in workspace, starter what-ifs or workflows.

Browse, search and compare all scenarios

Click Browse all n above the list ("Browse, search, group, and compare all scenarios"). The index replaces the three columns, headed All scenarios · n. Click a row to open it in the workbench, or Back to focus to return. New adds a scenario from here too.

ControlChoices
Search scenariosMatches the name, the what-if, and what each scenario changes. Every word you type must match.
Sort scenarios byObjective (default), Last updated, Created, Name, Status
Group scenarios byNo grouping, By lever (Price levers, Capacity levers, Demand levers, Supply levers, Other levers, Prompt-only), By status (Solved, Failed, Running, Draft). Click a group's header to fold it.
DensityCompact, Cozy (default), Comfortable. Comfortable also shows each what-if.
Smart listsAll, Pinned, Top performers (the 10 best solved), Recent (the 15 most recently updated), Stale, Infeasible, Solved, Failed

Sort, grouping and density are remembered in this browser. When nothing matches: "No scenarios match your filters."

Each row has a checkbox, its state, its name, a star when pinned, stale when out of date, and By owner when someone created it. A chip names the lever it moves (price, capacity, demand, supply, other, or prompt when there are no structured changes); hover it for the changes. A bar shows your goal's value against Base. A cost model is flipped so a bar going down means cheaper. — means not solved yet; infeasible means no plan could meet every requirement.

Hover a row for Pin / Unpin, Regenerate against the current model (stale rows), Rename and Delete.

Act on several at once

Tick rows and a bar appears: n selected, plus n hidden by filters when some ticked rows are out of view. Actions apply to every ticked row, hidden ones included.

ButtonWhat it does
CompareOpens a new workspace named model · compare with Base and up to 4 ticked scenarios side by side. Needs 2 ticked. See Workspaces.
PinPins every ticked row.
RegenerateSolves the stale ones again against the current model.
DuplicateAdds name (copy) of each, with the same what-if and changes, not solved.
DeleteDelete n scenario(s)? "Base is skipped. This cannot be undone."

Click X (Clear selection) to untick all.

Limits

  • Scenario list: 200 to 480 pixels wide (default 260). Editor: 300 to 560 (default 380).
  • Top performers holds 10; Recent holds 15.
  • Compare keeps Base plus 4 others; extra ticks are left out.
  • The progress log under a row isn't saved; reload and it's gone.
