Edit a dataset
Change values, rows and columns in a dataset's resource in a spreadsheet-style grid, find and replace, then save.
Where: Datasets→dataset name→resource
Each resource of a dataset opens in a grid. The grid is a working copy: nothing is stored until you
click Save. The footer counts rows and columns (24 rows × 6 columns), reads Unsaved changes while
there is something to save, and Saved once you have saved.
Edit cells
- Double-click a cell, or select it and type.
- Text that reads as a number is stored as a number. An empty cell is stored as empty.
- Ctrl/⌘+C copies the selection; Ctrl/⌘+V pastes a block of cells.
- Drag the fill handle at the corner of a selection to fill the cells down or across.
- Delete or Backspace clears the selected cells, or every cell of the selected columns. It never removes rows.
- Click New row at the bottom of the grid to add one blank row.
A paste, a fill-handle drag, and a clear each undo as one step.
Select rows and columns
| To select | Do this |
|---|---|
| Rows | Click the row markers on the left. Each click adds or removes that row. |
| A column | Click its header. Ctrl or Shift adds more columns. |
| A block of cells | Drag across them. |
Selecting never reorders the rows; only Sort does.
Hover a header to show its pencil and rename the column. "The name is written into this resource's header row when you save." Drag a header's edge to widen a column; widths last until you leave the page.
Change rows and columns
The toolbar above the grid:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add rows | Asks how many empty rows to append (10 by default). |
| Delete row / Delete N rows | Deletes the rows ticked with the row markers, after a confirm. |
| Add column | Asks for a name and inserts the column after the selected one, or at the end when none is selected. |
| Delete column / Delete N columns | Deletes every selected column and its values in one confirm. Turned off when every column is selected: "A table needs at least one column". |
| Deduplicate | Removes empty rows and repeats of an earlier row, keeping the first. A note says how many of each went. |
| Sort | Sorts the rows by the selected column. Click again to reverse. |
| Fill selection / Fill N cells | Sets every cell in the selected block, columns or rows to one value. Leave it empty to clear them. |
| Find & replace | Opens the find bar. See below. |
| Undo / Redo | Steps back and forward through your edits. |
| Discard | Throws away every unsaved edit. "The resource goes back to what is stored. This cannot be undone." |
| Save | Stores the resource. Green while there is something to save. |
Every toolbar change, Sort included, is an edit: it marks the grid Unsaved changes and undoes like any other.
How the two judgment calls work:
- Deduplicate compares the trimmed text of every cell in a row.
1and"1"match;Northandnorthdon't. - Sort puts numbers first, then true/false values, then text. Text sorts naturally, so
9comes before10. Blank cells always go last.
Find and replace
Click Find & replace, or press Ctrl/⌘+F anywhere on the page.
- Type in Find. Matches are highlighted and counted, for example
4 matches. - Type the new text in Replace with.
- Click Replace all.
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Match case | North no longer matches north. |
| Whole cell | Only cells whose whole value matches, and the whole value is replaced. Without it, every occurrence inside a cell is replaced. |
| In selection | Only the selected block. Turned off until you select one. |
What you type is matched literally, never as a pattern. Esc in Find closes the bar.
Save your changes
Save writes the whole resource in one go, in the row order shown. If it fails, a line reads Could not save — and the reason.
Moving away inside eode (the rail, the breadcrumb, another resource) drops unsaved edits without asking. Only closing or reloading the browser tab asks first.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Keys | Does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl/⌘+Z | Undo |
| Ctrl/⌘+Shift+Z or Ctrl/⌘+Y | Redo |
| Ctrl/⌘+F | Open find and replace, instead of the browser's find |
| Ctrl/⌘+S | Save |
Edit a large resource
The grid loads every row before you can edit, because a save replaces the whole resource. While it
loads, it reads Loading 3,000 of 12,400 rows….
A resource with more than 20,000 rows opens read-only, with the banner "This resource has N rows — more than the 20,000 the browser editor loads. It is shown read-only." You can still read it, sort it on screen and search it, but nothing can be saved. All of its rows are still stored. To change it, edit the workbook and import it again.
If a resource doesn't load, the panel reads Could not load this resource — with the reason and Try again.
Limits
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Rows the grid edits | 20,000. Above that, read-only. |
| Rows a resource can save | 100,000. More is refused. |
| Undo history | 100 steps. |
| Add rows in one go | 20,000. A larger number is cut to 20,000. |
| Column widths | Kept until you leave the page. |
